STS-122 was a NASA Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station (ISS), flown by the Space Shuttle "Atlantis". STS-122 marked the 24th shuttle mission to the ISS, and the 121st space shuttle flight since STS-1.

The mission was also referred to as ISS-1E by the ISS program. The primary objective of STS-122 was to deliver the European "Columbus" science laboratory, built by the European Space Agency (ESA), to the station. It also returned Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Daniel M. Tani to Earth. Tani was replaced on Expedition 16 by Léopold Eyharts, a French Flight Engineer representing ESA. After "Atlantis"' landing, the orbiter will be prepared for STS-125, the final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope. The completion of STS-122 leaves ten flights remaining in the Space Shuttle program until its end in 2010, excluding two as-yet-unconfirmed Contingency Logistic Flights.Cite web|url=http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/iss_manifest.html|title=Consolidated Launch Manifest|accessyear=2007|accessmonthday=October 20|publisher=NASA|year=2007|author=NASA]

The original target launch date for STS-122 was December 6, 2007, but due to engine cutoff sensor (ECO) reading errors, the launch was postponed to December 9.Cite web|url=http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5302|title=STS-122 launch attempt scrubbed - ET sensor issue|accessyear=2007|accessmonthday=December 6|publisher=NASA Spaceflight.com|year=2007|author=Chris Bergin] During the second launch attempt, the sensors failed again, and the launch was halted.Cite web|url=http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5319|title=PRCB debates STS-122 options - includes rollback and tank swap|accessyear=2007|accessmonthday=December 29|publisher=NASA Spaceflight.com|year=2007|author=Chris Bergin] A tanking test on December 18 revealed the probable cause to lie with a connector between the external tank and the shuttle. The connector was replaced and the shuttle launched during the third attempt on February 7, 2008.cite web|url=http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5330|title=STS-122: Engineers install ET-125's modified connector|author=Chris Bergin|publisher=NASA Spaceflight.com|date=January 13, 2008|accessdate=2008-01-17] cite web|url=http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2008/jan/HQ_M0806_Shuttle_Launch_Dates.html|title=NASA Announces Space Shuttle Launch Targets|publisher=National Aeronautics and Space Administration|author=NASA|date=January 11, 2008|accessdate=2008-01-11]

Wake-up calls

A tradition for NASA spaceflights since the days of Gemini, is that mission crews are played a special musical track at the start of each day in space. Each track is specially chosen, often by their family, and usually has a special meaning to an individual member of the crew, or is applicable to their daily activities.
