The Borough of Llanelli was one of thirty-seven local government districts inWales from 1974 to 1996. It was the smallest of six districts in the newly-created county ofDyfed , and was formed under theLocal Government Act 1972 by a merger of themunicipal borough s ofLlanelli andKidwelly ,Burry Port urban district andLlanelli Rural District all in the formeradministrative county ofCarmarthenshire . The district was governed byLlanelli Borough Council which was based in the town ofLlanelli .The district was abolished in 1996 to form part of the new
unitary authority ofCarmarthenshire .The
coat of arms with the motto 'Ymlaen Llanelli' was transferred from the former municipal borough to theLlanelli Borough Council byOrder in Council in 1975. [The Local Authorities (Armorial Bearings) Order 1975 (S.I. 1975 No. 621)] Llanelli Town Council, which covers the same area as the former municipal borough, was granted a new coat of arms in 1981.
