Halorespiration

Halorespiration

Halorespiration is the use of halogenated compounds as sources of energy. The halogen serves as terminal electron acceptor. It is also called dehalorespiration [ [http://biomikro.vscht.cz/trp/documents/mackova/Lecture%2008.orgcompoundspdf.pdf Lecture 08] ] .Halorespiration is a major form of anaerobic respiration. The most common substrates are chlorinated aliphatics (PCE, TCE), chlorinated phenols. Halorespiring bacteria (HRB) include some proteobacteria, chloroflexi (green nonsulfur bacteria) and low G+C gram positive Clostridia [ [http://www.eurochlor.org/upload/documents/document36.pdf Review of scientific literature on microbial dechlorination and chlorination of key chlorinated compounds 2001] ] .
