Aragon competed at the 1996 Olympics as a featherweight, losing in the quarterfinals to
Floyd Mayweather . Aragon won the world championships at welter in 2001 beatingAnthony Thompson (2001 World Amateur Boxing Championships ). He repeated his win in 2003 defeatingAndre Berto .(2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships ) and also was the 2003Pan American Games champion.At the
2004 Summer Olympics he won thesilver medal . He beat AmericanVanes Martirosyan but in the final, Aragón was defeated by surprise winnerBakhtiyar Artayev ofKazakhstan with a score of 36-26.Aragon was also a ten-time national amateur champion in Cuba, in each weight class between flyweight and welterweight.
