The Boston Breakers are a professional soccer club to be based in Boston, Massachusetts that will begin play in Women's Professional Soccer in 2009. The team will play its home games at Harvard Stadium, on the campus of Harvard University.

History

The Boston Breakers played in the Women's United Soccer Association from 2001 to 2003. The team won the regular season championship in 2003 with a record of 10-4-7. However, the Breakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Washington Freedom in the semifinal round.

Return of the Breakers in 2009

On April 18, 2007, the Chief Executive Officer of the Women's Soccer Initiative, Tonya Antonucci, announced that the Breakers, along with teams in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Bay Area, Chicago and the New York/New Jersey area, would be one of the eight teams that will form a relaunched women's league that will start play in 2009. On September 21, 2007, former U.S. women's national soccer team coach, Tony DiCicco, was named coach of the re-launched Breakers. [cite news

Player Allocation

On 16 September 2008 the initial WPS player allocation was conducted; US Women's National Team players Kristine Lilly, Angela Hucles and Heather Mitts were allocated to the Breakers. [http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2008/09/wps_allocation_list.html]

On 24 September 2008 the WPS International player allocation was conducted; English striker Kelly Smith, Brazilians Fabiana and Maycon and Japanese forward Shinobu Ohno also were allocated to the Breakers. [http://www.womensprosoccer.com/newsitem_ektid5106.aspx]
