Louis Lens

Louis Lens, son of rose-breeder Victor Lens , deceased on 10/05/2001, was the most esteemed rose breeder in the Benelux countries.

The roses introduced by himself and his still active nursery, NV Louis Lens, at Oudenburg near Bruges, Belgium (still adding about two varieties a year), outnumber David Austin's 190, and though never nearly as successful abroad, they grow an excellent quality (e.g. his multiple-prize winning white Hybrid Tea "Pascali" from 1956 was even voted in the World Top 10 and is still permanently offered by David Austin Roses), especially in the fairly rare Hybrid Musk group (like Guirlande d'Amour and Plaisanterie).

He and his creations are still frequently praised in gardening publications and - broadcasting in Belgium.

Since 1992 the nursery (Lens Roses ) is in hands of Rudy & Ann Velle, who continue distributing roses around the world and creating new varieties. (like Dinky and Fil des Saisons )The assortment of roses comprises more than 800 different types, ranging from elegant Old Garden roses to Rambler roses, Groundcover roses, Hybrid Musk roses, David Austin roses, Botanical species, Hybrid Tea roses, Floribundas, Standard roses… In short, the most valuable garden varietiesAt the nursery, you will find a rose garden covering nearly 2400 sq. yards (more than 2000 m²), and numerous rose borders. During springtime (April), one can take a look at a number of rare Climbers and Ramblers in full bloom in the greenhouse. In summer, a container field with roses in flowerpots offers you the opportunity to select the roses of your choice from a large assortment.
