Bigbury

Bigbury

Bigbury is a village and civil parish in the South Hams district of Devon, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 582. The Parish council meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in Bigbury Memorial Hall. (Excluding August & January)

The village of Bigbury (gbmapping|SX667464) has a pub called the Royal Oak, and a shop called the Bigbury Village Stores.

The parish also includes Bigbury-on-Sea (gbmappingsmall|SX650442) and St Ann's Chapel (gbmappingsmall|SX663472). St Ann's Chapel has the Chapel Inn and the Holywell Stores and Post Office. It lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Bigbury's church is partly 14th century (but extensively rebuilt in 1872) and includes brass portraits from that time. The baptismal font, sedilia and piscina are of a similar age, while the lectern and pulpit date from the following century.

Bigbury Golf Club

Situated midway between Bigbury and Bigbury-on-Sea is the fine 18 hole course. From its fairways there are views of moor and sea in all directions. Until the 1980s the course had no sand bunkers and few trees. Today it is a challenging course. The first tee is adjacent to the main road, so a hook can lead players in trouble and a ball in the road. Alternative start tees are on Hole 5 and Hole 12. Hole 8 has views up the Avon.

Burgh Island

Linked to Bigbury-on-Sea by a short sandspit which is covered at high tide, Burgh Island is famous for its Pilchard Inn and art deco hotel. Famous guests have included Agatha Christie.
