West Sussex town ofPulborough . It is situated at the western end of the town, just off the A283 road.History
The first railway to reach Pulborough was the line from Horsham to Petworth, opened on
10 October 1859 and extended toMidhurst in 1866. Pulborough and Billingshurst were the only two intermediate stations at the time. Four years later, a link was made to the Brighton to Portsmouth line; the line diverged from the Petworth branch at Hardham Junction, just south of Pulborough. Three platform faces were provided: a Downside platform on which the main station buildings stood, and anisland platform whose western face was used by Midhurst line trains. By World War II, these terminated at Pulborough rather than running to Horsham or beyond. Goods facilities and a cattle market were provided. [Mitchell, Vic and Smith, Keith. Services to Petworth ceased in 1966, leaving just the
Arun Valley Line serving Pulborough. The buildings, including a large, wide canopy on the island platform, remain largely unchanged as of 2007, although former Midhurst platform has been filled in and only two platform faces are now in use. The standard service, provided by Southern, consists of 2tph (trains per hour) to London Victoria, 1tph to Chichester and 1tph to Portsmouth Harbour and Bognor Regis.Gallery
