John Condit (
July 8 ,1755 -May 4 ,1834 ), was aUnited States Representative and aUnited States Senator fromNew Jersey and father of United States RepresentativeSilas Condit .Condit was born in
Orange, New Jersey and after attending public schools he then studied medicine. Condit went on to serve as a surgeon in theAmerican Revolutionary War . He became one of the founders and a trustee of the Orange Academy in 1785. Condit was a member of theNew Jersey General Assembly from 1788 to 1789. Then was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Sixth and Seventh Congresses (March 4 ,1799 toMarch 3 ,1803 ). Next, Condit was appointed as a Democratic Republican to theUnited States Senate to fill the vacancy in the term beginningMarch 4 ,1803 , caused by the failure of the legislature to elect; subsequently elected and served fromSeptember 1 ,1803 , toMarch 3 ,1809 ; again appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation ofAaron Kitchell ; subsequently elected and served fromMarch 21 ,1809 , toMarch 3 ,1817 ; elected to the Sixteenth Congress and served fromMarch 4 ,1819 toNovember 4 ,1819 , when he resigned to accept a Treasury position; appointed assistant collector of the port ofNew York 1819-1830; died in Orange Township, New Jersey onMay 4 ,1834 , and was interred in the Old Graveyard, Orange,Essex County, New Jersey .External links
