Planernaya

Planernaya

Planernaya ( _ru. Планерная) is the northern terminus of the Moscow Metro's Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line. Opened on December 30, 1975 it was the final section of the northern extension of the Krasnopresnenskiy radius. The architect Trenin faced the pillars with white marble, floor with black granite and decorated the walls with geometric patterns formed from white, blue-grey, and yellow shades, showing precision of carpentry. This gave the station a very bright appearance.

Once again showing the end of the economical policies in metro, the station has two surface vestibules which lead to Fomicheva and Planernaya streets, near the Moscow Canal.

To the north of the station is the Planernoye depot which opened with the extension, (and hence relieved Krasnaya Presnya). The station had been the northermost in the Metro until the opening of Medvedkovo in 1978. It has a daily passenger traffic rate of 49300.

There was a confusion of pronunciation of the station. Whether said as PlAnernaya or PlanYOrnaya, the former implies the connetation with gliding and aviation (Russian for glider-Planer) the second name however implies to carpentry (i.e. planning) for which the original village, Planyornoe, prior to its annexation into Moscow and rebuilding into a municipality was famous for.
