Chicago, Illinois , Latimer became ajournalist for the "Chicago Tribune ", writing aboutcrime and meetingAl Capone andBugs Moran , among others. In the mid-1930s he turned to writingfiction , starting with a series of novels featuring private eye William Crane, in which he introduced his typical blend ofhardboiled crime fiction and elements ofscrewball comedy .During the
Second World War Latimer served in theUnited States Navy . After the war, he moved toCalifornia and continued his work as a Hollywoodscreenwriter .He died of
