Samangan is a city and capital of Samangan Province in northern Afghanistan. [National Geospatial Intelligence Agency]

It is known for its ancient ruins including notably the Takht e Rostam.

Samangan is actually a province in Northern Afghanistan. The province consists of seven different districts; Aybak, Khoram Wa Sarbagh, Rui Du Ab, Dara i Suf Bala, Dara i Suf Payan, Firoz Nachir and Hazrate Sultan. The province capital city is named Aybak and located in the district of Aybak. The city Aybak is often wrongly called Samangan. Before 2001 was also the district of Kholm (Khulm) a part of Samangan but Kholm is nowdays within the borders of the province of Balkh.

Currently is Qazi Enayat Enayatullah the governor of Samangan. He has his office in Aybak.

In the Wolesi Jirga elections from 18 october 2005 were finally Dilba Nazari, Haji Sultani, Mawlawi Mohammad Islam Mohammadi and Ahmad Khan elected as members of the parliament from Samangan. Mawlawi Mohammad Islam Mohammadi was murdered in January 2007, but the other three are still members of the parliament. Next election will probably be carried out during 2009.
