Lorenzo Sabbatini (1530 - 1577) was an Italian painter of the
Renaissance .Biography
Sabbatini was born in
Bologna .Nicknamed Lorenzino da Bologna, studied with
Prospero Fontana , who was his teacher and collaborator. His style was also influenced byGiorgio Vasari and the Emilianmannerism by theParmigianino .He visited
Rome duringGregory XIII 's (1502-1585)pontificate and was acquainted withRaphael 's school of painting, which he tried to imitate, to such extent that many people thought that he was one of his disciples. Afterward, he was hired by the Vatican to execute a number of paintings adorning the walls of theCappella Paolina (withFederico Zuccari ) and in theSala Regia , where he performed his most famous painting, "The Triumph of Faith over Infidelity". Due to his successes and thePope 's satisfaction with this and other works, he was appointed superintendent of the decorations of the Vatican.Returning to Bologna, between 1566 and 1573, he was in great demand to decorate the walls of several churches there, such as Santa Maria delle Grazie, Chiesa della Morte, San Martino Maggiore, and San Giacomo.
The engraver
Giulio di Antonio Bonasone and the Dutch painterDenis Calvaert were his disciples.Sabbatini died in Rome in 1577.
