- Eddington Varmah
Eddington Varmah is a
Liberia n politician. He served asJustice Minister in the administration of President Charles Taylor. Cllr Varmah was viewed by international observers as one of the few level headed individuals in Taylor's government; always encouraging the observation of the letter of law by all inclusive of President Taylor. As Minister of Justice Cllr Varmah always said "If the people hear that the Justice Minister is coming and they run away, then I have failed because they are not supposed to run from the Justice Minister because he is a tyrant. But instead, they are supposed to welcome his presence as they feel he will ensure that things which are wrong are brought to Justice" It was this love for justice which led to his removal from the Ministry of Justice by Taylor. After Taylor resigned from office in mid-2003, Varmah was chosen as Deputy Speaker of theNational Transitional Legislative Assembly of Liberia (NTLA).On
14 March 2005 , Varmah and NTLA speakerGeorge Dweh were suspended due to allegations of financial mismanagement. It is interesting however to note that the same members of the Liberian Assembly who fought to remove him and others from their post due to allegations offraud are now fighting to return them to their posts with just weeks remaining before the newly elected government ofEllen Johnson-Sirleaf takes seat. This leave many to ask if Cllr. Varmah was in fact involved in fraud in the first place, then why are they trying to reinstate him? Thus, it must have been a conspiracy all along to defame one of the few members of the former ruling party who the newly elected government could use due to countless qualifications and abilities.Eddington Varmah is from
Bopulu and after being elected Senator in 1997, he fought and petitioned for what was thenLower Lofa county to become its own county (state) and was successful in gaining it. Lower Lofa county is now calledGbarpolu county and is recognized as one of Liberia's counties.
