Carl Johan Thyselius (8 June 1811 – 11 January 1891) was a politician, state official (Swedish: ämbetsman), Supreme Court justice (Swedish: justitieråd) 1856-60, "Church Minister" (comparable to Minister of Education, Swedish: ecklesiastikminister) 1860-63, Minister of the Civil Department (responsible for trade, industry and ship transport; Swedish: civilminister) 1875-80, and served as prime minister from 1883 to 84.

In 1848 he married Charlotta Melart with whom he had a daughter.

Biography

Carl Johan Thyselius was born in Österhaninge, Södermanlands län, asthe son of the vicar and later bishop Pehr Thyselius and ChristinaMargareta Bergsten.

Typical for his time, after an education in administration at Uppsala University, he combined asuccessful career in high level official positions with major politicalassignments. He was among others justice to the Supreme Court1856-1860, church minister 1860-1863, president of theKammarkollegium 1864-1875 and civilminister 1875-1880. After
Arvid Posse's resignation 1883 Thyselius reluctantly became primeminister on request of Oscar II for one year. In that way he was the firstserf to become prime minister of Sweden.

He died on 11 January 1891 in Stockholm.

Trivia

Thyselius was Sweden's first prime minister not descended from the nobility and furthermore the oldest at that time, being 72 years old upon accession.
