Irish Derby Stakes

__NOTOC__The Irish Derby is a Group 1 flat horse race in the Republic of Ireland for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs (2,414 metres) at the Curragh, County Kildare in late June or early July.

It has been run annually since 1866, although it did not become a major international race until Joe McGrath brought about an increase in its prize money in 1962. That year's running, the first under the title of the Irish Sweeps Derby, included Larkspur, the first Epsom Derby winner to participate since Orby won both races in 1907 [ [http://www.carlow-nationalist.ie/news/story/?trs=cwidojcwmh Forget Ryder Cup - Derby was the biggest, Carlow Nationalist, 28 June 2006] ] .Since then it has often been contested by the leading horses from its English and French equivalents – the Epsom Derby and Prix du Jockey Club.

From 1986 to 2007 the race was sponsored by Budweiser. The present sponsor, until 2012, is Dubai Duty Free.
