September 11 - Against the backdrop ofWorld War I , which forced the premature ending to the regular season on September 1st, theBoston Red Sox defeat theChicago Cubs , 2-1, in Game 6 of the World Series to win their fifthWorld Championship , and third in four years, four games to two. The Red Sox would not win anotherWorld Championship for 86 years. The drought was often attributed to theCurse of the Bambino .
