upper school isThurston Community College , with about 1,500 pupils. The school also has a Sixth form, with 400-500 students. The village also has a primary school.Thurston railway station opened in 1846 and is still operating today. The village also has frequent bus service to the neighbouring town of Bury St Edmunds.The village has two public houses (The Victoria and The Fox and Hounds) and a members bar (Thurston Community Centre).
Activities in the village include an Air Training Corps Squadron (863 Thurston Squadron) and several sporting and musical activities held at the schools, village hall and community centre.
