- Kalpathipuzha
Kalpathipuzha River is one of the main
tributaries of theBharathapuzha River , the second-longest river inKerala ,south India .The Kalpathipuzha originates in the upper slopes of the
Western Ghats deep insidePalakkad district from the place calledChenthamarakulam in the hills, north ofWalayar . It is formed from the confluence of four streams, namelyMalampuzha ,Walayar ,Korayar andVarattar . The famousMalampuzha dam is built across this river just before it enters Palakkad town. The river is named after the Kalpathi Siva temple in Palakkad town. One of the problem faced by Kalpathypuzha, like most other rivers in Kerala, is the illegal
sand mining . This has left many pits in the river bed which lead to shrub growth. During summer the river is covered by a green carpet ofWater Hyacinth and other shrubs.Other tributaries of Kalpathipuzha
