Luis Angel "Canena" Márquez Sánchez (born
October 28 1925 and diedMarch 1 ,1988 ,Aguadilla, Puerto Rico ) was a professionalbaseball player. He was the third Puerto Rican to play in the major leagues (afterHiram Bithorn andLuis Rodríguez Olmo ). Márquez played in a total of 68 games in the major leagues, split in two seasons between the Boston Braves, theChicago Cubs and thePittsburgh Pirates . His final game was on July 11, 1954.Márquez was involved in baseball through all his life, being at times player, coach, trainer, and even
Little League coach.The local municipal baseball stadium in Aguadilla is named for him. Should
Major League Baseball approve the use of the field for winter league use, the stadium will temporarily host theIndios de Mayagüez during thePuerto Rican Professional Baseball League seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09, since Mayagüez'sIsidoro García Baseball Stadium will be demolished and rebuilt in time for the 2010Central American and Caribbean Games .Márquez was murdered in Puerto Rico; he was shot during a domestic dispute.
