1981 comedy movie starringBarbra Streisand andGene Hackman ,Diane Ladd ,Dennis Quaid ,Kevin Dobson , andWilliam Daniels . Directed byJean-Claude Tramont .Plot
The story concerns a man (Hackman) nearing middle age who is "downsized" and reduced to working as the manager of an all-night pharmacy/convenience store, and the effects this has on his life with his wife (Ladd), adult son (Quaid), and a newfound relationship with his sister-in-law, a somewhat dizzy, hilariously untalented singer-songwriter (Streisand) married to a volatile firefighter (Dobson).
Production
The film was originally a low-budget affair, starring Hackman and
Lisa Eichhorn ; however, Barbra Streisand's then-manager, Sue Mengers, who was friends with the film's director, suggested Barbra for the part instead of Eichhorn. Several biographies suggest that because of the film's subsequent failure at the box office, Streisand fired Mengers as her manager.Streisand's agent Sue Mengers was married to the director, Jean-Claude Tramont. Streisand's manager is Martin Erlichman.
Reception
Streisand was nominated for a
1981 Golden Raspberry Award for her performance. The film received very mixed reviews; despite a Razzie nomination, some critics cited Streisand's performance as one of her very best, up to that time (Stephen Holden, inRolling Stone magazine, gave the film a positive review, adding that Streisand's performance suggested Marilyn Monroe).References
