Public education in Raleigh, North Carolina is serviced by the Wake County Public School System and more than a dozen independent public charter schools.

*Public High Schools
**Athens Drive High School, is a co-educational secondary Wake County public high school that serves grades 9-12. As of 2004-2005 the school has approximately 1,747 enrolled students and approximately 130 hired educators.
**Broughton High School, full name Needham B. Broughton High School, was founded in 1929 and is a co-educational, International Baccalaureate secondary Wake County public high school that serves grades 9-12. As of 2005-2006, the school has approximately 2,157 enrolled students and approximately 150 hired educators.
**Enloe High School, full name William G. Enloe High School, opened in 1962 and was named in honor of the Mayor of Raleigh at the time. Enloe was proud to be the first integrated high school in Raleigh, and diversity is part of the reason Enloe has led the county as the top magnet high school in the [http://www.wcpss.net Wake County Public School System] . As a magnet school, Enloe has programs not offered at other high schools, such as the Medical and Bioscience Academy, the Advanced Placement Program (AP), and International Baccalaureate Programme (IB). Enloe was named the Top Magnet High School in the Nation in 2000 (Dr. Rondald Simpson Magnet School of Merit Award). In addition, Enloe was ranked 52nd among the Top 100 High Schools in the Nation in 2005, according to Newsweek. Governor Michael Easley named W.G. Enloe 2002 Hallmark School of Excellence. As of 2004-2005, the school has approximately 2263 enrolled students and as of 2003-2004 approximately 153 faculty members, 20 of which are nationally certified by the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards and 39% possessing an advanced degree. **Leesville Road High School is a co-educational secondary Wake County public high school. It was built in 1993.
**Millbrook High School is a co-educational secondary Wake County public high school
**Sanderson High School, full name Jesse O. Sanderson High School, is a co-educational secondary Wake County public high school that serves grades 9-12. As of 2004-2005, the school has approximately 1,800 enrolled students and approximately 150 hired educators.

**Wakefield High School is a co-educational secondary Wake County public high school that opened in August 2000, making it Raleigh's newest public high school.

** Exploris Middle School is a public charter school operated as part of Exploris museum. The school focuses on global education with an integrated curriculum.

** Ligon Middle School is a magnet middle school. It boasts a large number of elective choices, about 100-200 choices, and has an AG program. Ligon is located in downtown Raleigh on Lenior Street. It has a soccer field, football field, but no track as there is limited space in downtown Raleigh. The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade halls hallways are relatively close with the electives divided into areas. There is an Arts Wing for visual and musical art, computer labs located in a group, a gym that is divided up into sections for different electives, and trailers outside for foreign languages. Some electives are chess, orchestra, surf the net, flag football, pottery, band, dance, Spanish, French, Chinese, etc. Ligon is able to boast one of the few exploring technology electives in Wake County where students are able to use a wide variety of tools to do anything from making wooden race cars to learn to develop photographs.
