Jean Marie Chérestal was prime minister of Haïti from 2 March 2001 to 21 January 2002. He decided to resign after false accusations of mismanagement mainly aimed at destroying his reputation. After a few attempts to resign, on 16 January 2002 Cherestal presented a letter of resignation to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, which he did not accept until 21 January.
