December 6 ,1927 -December 1 ,1990 ) was an Italianmovie director . Most of his films are very violent, yet intelligent action movies. He is best known for hisspaghetti western s. Many of these action movies contain social criticism of left-wing political background. Corbucci actually was acommunist . The art-direction in his movies is mostlysurrealistic and apocalyptic, another trademark is his sense forblack humour .He was considered the best director of westerns after
Sergio Leone . All his westerns were dark and brutal, with the characters portrayed as sadistic anti hero's. His films featured very high body counts, scenes of mutiliation against the main character (inDjango an ear is cut off, inJonny Oro , Indians are killed in the hundreds and inThe Hellbenders , all main characters are brutally shot down)Women were treated badly in his films, and the main characters would lead an extirmination against the enemy, all his films had a grim ending.Although, he was one of the best western directors, he was not as notable as
Sergio Leone , who became a leadingHollywood director. He is also the older brother of screenwriter and film director
Bruno Corbucci .Career
Corbucci started his career by directing mostly low-budget
sword and sandal movies. His first commercial success was with the cult spaghetti western "Django", starringFranco Nero , the leading man in many of his movies. After "Django", Corbucci made many other spaghetti westerns, which made him the most successful Italian western director afterSergio Leone and one of Italy's most productive directors. His most famous of these pictures was "The Great Silence ", a dark and gruesome western starring a mute action hero and apsychopathic bad guy. The film was banned in some countries for its excessive display of violence. In the 1970s and 1980s Corbucci mostly directed comedies, often starringAdriano Celentano . His movies were rarely taken seriously by contemporary critics and he was considered an exploitation director, but Corbucci has managed to attain a cult reputation.elected filmography
