"Effigy of the Forgotten" is the debut full-length album by New York-based death metal act Suffocation, released in 1991. The cover artwork was created by Dan Seagrave. Several of the tracks had appeared on earlier releases: "Reincremation" and "Involuntary Slaughter" were re-recorded from the "Reincremation" demo, while "Infecting the Crypts", "Mass Obliteration", and "Jesus Wept" appeared originally on the "Human Waste" EP.

The album became very influential in the death metal and grindcore genres [ [http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:h9fqxqe5ld0e~T1 All Music Guide Biography] ] , and is credited with the establishment of many stylistic features which would come to typify the genre that came to be known as brutal death metal, such as very low vocal delivery and songs which incorporate the technique of intense complex palm muting power chord patterns, extremely fast tremolo picking, and scale movements. In contrast to many modern Brutal death metal bands which are often discounted as derivative and unoriginal, many music critics praise the intricate riffs and innovative songwriting on "Effigy of the Forgotten", as well as Suffocation's later works. In particular, many note the subtle and non-traditional melodic sense employed on the album.ww

Both this album and "Pierced from Within" have been re-released by Roadrunner Records as part of the Two from the Vault series.
