- Secretary of State for India
The office of Secretary of State for India or India Secretary was created in 1858 when
Company rule in India ended and India was brought under direct British rule (British Raj ). It was the cabinet office responsible for the government of India. In 1935, theBurma Office was added; the sameSecretary of State headed both Departments, and was accordingly styled the Secretary of State for India and Burma. TheIndia Office came to an end in 1947, when India became independent; Burma achieved its independence early the next year.ecretaries of State for India
