Born in
Denmark , Dr. Genefke has devoted hercareer specifically to the treatment and rehabilitation of victims of torture. She began her career in this field in1973 afterAmnesty International issued a plea tophysicians throughout the world to assist those who had beentortured .She started as co-founder of the Danish Medical Group of
Amnesty International in1974 . In1982 Dr. Genefke founded the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) inCopenhagen ,Denmark . TheInternational Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims was founded in1985 , initially as theinternational arm of the RCT. As the demands continued to grow, the IRCT was established as an international and independentorganisation in 1997 under Dr. Inge Genefke serving as the IRCTAmbassador .Dr. Genefke's leadership will have a lasting impact on new
institutions , such as theInternational Criminal Court , and other efforts to hold torturers accountable for their destruction. Her care for survivors remains arole model of hope, compassion, and professional bravery to others around the world.ee also
