Sam Clancy, Jr. (born
May 4 1980 inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania ) is an American professionalbasketball player. As of October 2006, he is signed withLe Mans Sarthe Basket in the French pro basketball league. Previously, he was signed with the NBA'sPortland Trail Blazers andPhiladelphia 76ers ; however he has never played a game for either team. He was injured as a member of the 76ers, and was waived by the Blazers. He has also played for theRussia n teamUnics Kazan , Grupo Capitol Valladolid, and theIdaho Stampede of theContinental Basketball Association (CBA).Clancy, the son of former
NFL star (and currentOakland Raiders assistant coach Sam Clancy, Sr.), was selected by the Sixers with the #45 pick (in the 2nd round) of the2002 NBA Draft ; however he missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury, and was waived by the team the following preseason. He has since played in the CBA and in Europe.Clancy played collegiately at the
University of Southern California , where he finished as USC's all-time leader in blocked shots (195). He is third all-time at USC in points (1,657), second in rebounds (839), and fifth in steals (134). In 2002 he was thePac-10 Player of the Year. Prior to that, he was starred alongside Steve Logan on the St. Edward Eagles, located in Lakewood Ohio, north of Cleveland, winning the Ohio State Championship his senior year.Clancy was named the CBA 2004-05 Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year.
In July 2005, Clancy was drafted with the first pick by the Mankato Mallards of the
All-American Professional Basketball League , but never played a game because the league folded later that year.In October 2005, Clancy was signed to a one-year contract by the Trail Blazers but was waived before ever playing a game for them.
