Bas-Rhin and theAlsace "region" ofAlsace . The name of the communes is often shortened locally, both in French and in the Alsatian dialect, as Schilik (IPA| [ʃilik] ).It is the largest
suburb of the city ofStrasbourg , and is adjacent to it on the northwest. In the 2005 census, Schiltigheim had a population of 31,400 and was therefore the third biggest town in theBas-Rhin . In French, its inhabitants are called "Schilikois" ("Schilick" is nickname for Schiltigheim used in the region, as well in French as in the "Elsässerditsch dialect").History
The town dates back to the 9th century, when it grew around the castle and the church.
