Anna C. Verna

Anna C. Verna

Honorable Anna Cibotti Verna is President (2000-present) of the Philadelphia City Council on which she has served since 1975 as the representative of the Second District, which encompasses most of South Philadelphia and as well as most of the western end of Center City. She is a Democrat and generally thought of as progressive. Her husband operates a funeral home. Anna C. Verna was elected to Philadelphia City Council in 1975, defeating three others in the Democratic primary. In 1999, Verna became the first woman in Philadelphia's 300-year history to assume the Presidency of the City Council of Philadelphia.

Generally regarded as a fiscal conservative and social moderate, Verna has been a consistent supporter of tax reform in Philadelphia and has fought for affordable housing in various areas of her district, which extends from Center City through Southwest Philadelphia.

Her father, William A. Cibotti, represented the Second District until his death in 1975 when Anna Cibotti Verna assumed the position from him.
