True Blue (John Williamson song)
- True Blue (John Williamson song)
True Blue is an Australian folk song written in 1981 by singer-songwriter John Williamson. The song uses Australian slang, with the title being an example of this, meaning "totally Australian".
True Blue is often performed at sporting events and was performed by Williamson twice on acoustic guitar at Australia Zoo during Steve Irwin's public memorial service (it was Steve's favorite song); once shortly after the beginning ceremony, and again at the end as Irwin's truck was driven out of the Crocoseum for the final time.
When asked about the meaning of the song, Williamson, an ardent patriot, said “Being Australian is a paradox to what the rest of the world feel comforted by. I’m not suggesting that people are discomforted by our actions, but the song acts as a suggestion that the original qualities of being Australian have been thrown out the door in some bid to assimilate. That’s why I made the Sponge cake analogy. A lot of people think its about love”.
The song had notable success in particular in more rural areas of Australia. At the Country Music Awards of Australia in 1982, the song took out Tamworth Country Music Festival's ‘Golden fiddle’ for best song writer and composer.
