Apparently, he joined Reading after seeing the team play at Wembley in the 1995 First Division Playoff Final between Reading and Bolton Wanderers, believing the 80,000 capacity stadium to be Reading's home ground.fact|date=July 2007 However his time at the club was marked by a series of injuries, and his club career in England never took off. In England, he was also known under the nicknames "Boris", "Bobby", and "Wiggy", the latter due to Mikhailov's wig. After retiring from active sports he started a career in football administration. He was vice-president of the
Bulgarian Football Union from 2001 until 2005, when he replacedIvan Slavkov as president. In 1998 he married Maria Petrova, a former prominent rhythmic gymnast.
