Catenet

Catenet

Catenet is an obsolete term for a system of packet-switched communication networks interconnectedvia gateways. It was coined at a time when "network" meant what is now called a local area network, to refer to the concept of linking these networks into a "network of networks". The Internet is a catenet. The term "internet" (with a lower-case 'i'), referring to any network speaking the Internet protocol has superseded the term "catenet", as the Internet Protocol is the only cross-networking protocol in wide use.
