Toorak Handicap

Toorak Handicap

The Toorak Handicap is a mile long (1600m) open handicap race for horses aged 3 years old and upwards run at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne Australia. The race is for thoroughbred horses, and takes place in early October as part of the Spring Racing Carnival in conjunction with the Caulfield Cup.

1891 held over 9 furlongs (approx. 1800m)
1892 - 1971 held over 8 furlongs (approx. 1600m)
1972 onwards held over 1600m.

1881 – 1978 was a Principal Race
1979 onwards Group 1

Name

1881 - 1980 the race was known as the ‘Toorak Handicap’
1981 - 1984 the race was known as the ‘The IXL’
1985 - 1989 the race was known as the ‘The Elders Mile’
1990 onwards the race reverted back to the ‘Toorak Handicap’
