Batta, also is an Anglo-Indian military term, probably derived from the Canarese "bhatta" (rice in the husk), meaning a special allowance of pay made to officers, soldiers, or other public servants in the field.

The amount and circumstances of "batta" given were complex and made up a substantial amount of the pay received by soldiers. Argument sover allowances led to instances of near-mutiny.

With the incorporation of the Honourable East India Company's military forces into the Crown's army, much of their allowance of batta was lost since the British Army did not receive it.

Batta is also a family name distributed all over the world. the majority of Batta name comes from Europe, a minority from India and a sprinling from the mid east countries.
