Solomon H. Snyder (born
December 26 ,1938 ) is an Americanneuroscientist .Snyder graduated from
Georgetown University in 1958 and Georgetown Medical School in 1962. At a very early age he published his research onornithine decarboxylase and RNA synthesis which opened up countless vistas in theneuroscience s. After a two-yearfellow ship at the NIH, Snyder moved to theJohns Hopkins University School of Medicine to complete his residency inpsychiatry .He studied under
Julius Axelrod and in 1973 discovered theopioid receptor in close collaboration withCandace Pert and laterendorphins . For this work he was awarded theAlbert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 1978. He also received theAMA Scientific Achievement Award in 1985, theNational Medal of Science in 2003 and the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research (2007).He is also known for his work describing the role of
nitric oxide as aneurotransmitter .Presently he is University Distinguished Service
Professor ofPsychiatry ,Neuroscience s, andPharmacology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is also Senior Editor,PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America).He is listed by the
Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as one of the 10 most-often citedbiologist s and he also has the highesth-index of any living biologist.External links
