Playing career

Before college, Gill played quarterback at Nashoba Regional High School Fact|date=March 2008

After being drafted in the eighth round, 207th overall in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins, Gill spent four years playing for Providence College. He entered the NHL during the 1997-98 NHL season and played over 600 regular season games over eight seasons with the Bruins. During the cancelled 2004-05 NHL season, Gill played for Lukko in the Finnish SM-liiga.

On July 1, 2006, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Gill to a three-year deal. His play during his time in Toronto was not as good as he had done in Boston. On February 26, 2008, they traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a second round draft pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and a fifth round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

The Penguins traded for him on the sameday, that they received Marian Hossa from the Atlanta Thrashers. He helped them win the eastern conference and to advance to the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals where they lost in six games.
