G-series (Toronto subway car)

G-series (Toronto subway car)

The G-series rapid transit cars were a Toronto subway car model, built between 1953-1959.

The cars were built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company for the Toronto Transit Commission.

A total of 140 cars were built. Most were steel-bodied and had painted exteriors; however, six experimental aluminum-bodied cars demonstrated the benefits of using aluminum for rapid transit car construction. The G-series cars were frequently described as "robust and reliable" despite being constructed overweight and being energy-inefficient. The last cars in this series were retired from revenue service in 1990.

The only surviving cars in original condition are 5098-5099 and reside at Halton Radial Railway Museum in Milton, Ontario. Other surviving cars include:

G Work Cars

* G-2 5100 and 5105 became garbage cars and scrapped in 1998
* 2 G-2 became tunnel washing units in 2001
* RT-34 and RT-35 ex G-2 were a garbage car set, but RT-34 has since been retired after an accident with G-1 grinder car and stored at Davisville Yard since 2004
* RT-35 ex G-2 5103 converted as work car 1988; scrapped 2007
* G-1 RT-36 ex G-1 5068 converted as grinder car 1991; scrapped 2007
* G-1 RT-37 (ex-5069?) converted as grinder; scrapped 2007
