History

Mount Neighbour was officially opened on September 1975. At the same time as St Thomas primary, the schools have faced rivalries in the past. But they rarely go past verbal taunts.(Mount Neighbours taunts better that St Tomases of course) The school catered for years kindergarten to six. with originally one classroom for each but in recent times two year groups have been merged into one class.

Traditions

Mount Neighbour Primary School has had many traditions including yearly cross country, wheels day, yearly camps, free dress day, sports day, swimming carinval, water day (recently omitted due to drought), Big splash, shaving cream fight, graduation dinner, peace keepers and marble season. These traditions are looked forward to by all students and staff. The tradition that is looked forward to by all students is the end of year Big Splash trip. All students and staff travel to Big Splah water park in Canberra's northern suburbs and spend a day in the water there.

MNPS Now

Mount Neighbour has been closed because of the 2006 Canberra school closures. Before, the school was declining rapidly from 2005-2006 having less than 130 students out of the 400 capacity. In May 2008 the ACT Government stated that the school was "structurally unsound based on condition audits, and would not be viable to retain for use as community facilities". According to 5 May 2008 edition of "The Canberra Times", the ACT Government plans to demolish the school, with its consultants recommending aged-care facilities be built on the site.

chool closure

The school closure was officially announced on the Wednesday of Week 9 2006.
