- Boiled Angel
"Boiled Angel" was an amateur
comic book byFlorida -based underground comic book artistMike Diana in the early 1990s. The comic contained graphic depictions of a variety of taboo and gory subject matters, and in 1993 found its way into the hands of Florida Assistant State's Attorney Stuart Baggish. Diana was subsequently charged with several counts ofobscenity and fought a long legal battle with the aid of theComic Book Legal Defense Fund , which was eventually lost. Due to the controversy surrounding the book and its low circulation, it is one of the few underground or amateur comics to be significantly valuable to the comic book collectors market.Mike Diana's legal ordeal has inspired a play by
David Johnston entitled "Busted Jesus Comix". The play borrows many particulars from the legal case and punishments meted out to Mike Diana, while the character of the comic artist in "Busted Jesus" and the background story are entirely fictional. The play has been produced on "Off-Off-Broadway " and in LA, and has received very favorable reviews. Fact|date=February 2007The prosecution of Mike Diana has also been referenced in the graphic novel "Teenagers from Mars" by Rick Spears and Rob G.
