United States Navy have been named "Chesapeake" afterChesapeake Bay , the body of water alongMaryland andVirginia .*The USS|Chesapeake|1799|6, a 36 gun frigate, was launched on 2 December 1799 by Gosport Navy Yard and commissioned early in the following year.
*The
sloop USS "Chesapeake" was renamed USS|Patapsco|1799|6 in 1799 while still under construction.*The USS|Chesapeake|1898|6, a training ship, was renamed "Severn" on 15 June 1905.
*The USS|Chesapeake|ID-3395, a freighter, was launched in 1900 by Harlan and Hollingsworth in Wilmington, Delaware and purchased by the US Navy on 31 August 1918.
