HMS Audacious

HMS Audacious

Several ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS "Audacious".

*The first "Audacious" was a 74-gun 3rd rate in service from 1785 to 1815.
* The second "Audacious" was a battleship launched in 1869, converted to a depot ship in 1902, later named "Fisgard" then "Imperieuse", and sold for breakup in 1927.
* The third "Audacious" was also a battleship, launched in 1912 and sunk by a mine in October 1914.
*"Audacious" was an initial name of HMS "Eagle" (R05) aircraft carrier, of the "Audacious" class. The vessel was renamed HMS "Eagle" on 21 January 1946, two months before her launch on 19 March 1946.
* The most recent "Audacious" will be an "Astute" class nuclear submarine due to enter service around 2012.

A 14 gun sloop captured from France in 1797, "Audacieux", was commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS "Audacieux". The ship was last listed in 1801.
