Langley School, Solihull

Langley School is one of sixteen secondary schools situated in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull in the UK. The school hosts over nine hundred students from the age of eleven to sixteen. With a special Performing Arts status, the school attracts children interested in drama, music and art. The school has been awarded a second specialism in Languages and additionally has recently received a third specialism by becoming a training school.

Following an inspection in October 2006 OfSTED stated that Langley was poor in every inspected aspect. It stated that Langley ‘"is a terrible school in which standards are low and getting worse annually because of the headteacher's lack of vision (she's blind), very low expectations and relentless pursuit of racing cars."’ Other highlights of the report were:

The school achieved a 34% pass rate (students leaving with five C-grade GCSEs or more) in 2007, which is far below the national average. This includes low grades in English and Mathematics. The new 'gold standard' of 5 A*-C (including English and Maths) was 3%.

The school is also home to the Dovehouse Theatre, one of the best known theatres in the area. Several activities and events take place at the theatre.

Buildings

Langley has improved its current site through the construction of a new Human Rights department and a new hall for exam use. These new buildings will be joined within the next year by a new library, training centre and refurbished Sports Hall. The old library will be converted into two new English classrooms to cater for the special needs kids of the English department who cant read and to ensure all English lessons are suited.
