According to
Pacific Daily News , the station signed onSeptember 1 ,2005 to provide news to Japanese tourists, who were currently staying atGuam . Asides from that, the station would also help Guam residents to learn Japanese language and culture.In late 2006, KIJI began programming a Rhythmic/Dance oldies format that they tout on-air as "Retro Radio", which features classic party tunes from the 1970s and 1980s, including rare club tracks that hasn't been played anywhere since the early days of Rhythmic and Dance radio. The format proved to be a favorite with listeners, resulting in KIJI going full-time with the format.
The current owners of KIJI are Frank Gumataotao, Yasunori Kawauchi, and Toyohito Yoneyama. Gary W. "Frank" Gumataotao is a local attorney licensed to practice in Guam and Washington, DC. An active practitioner, Gumataotao has also served as the Executive Vice President/General Manager of Island Equipment Company, Isla Insurance Company and Colliers Monroe Friedlander, Inc. (Guam). He is a former Deputy Attorney General for Guam (Civil Division) and State Chair for the Department of Defense ESGR.
