Writing mystery stories since 1991, Rühmann uses his own name since 1996; for several years he published his stories using his middle names "Günter Hilmar" as a pen name.
The main characters of most of his stories are the
commissar s Walter Schweiger and Thekla Braun. The earlierepisode s also make use of the commissars Kreutz, Bube, and Hertrampf. Residing almost exclusively in Braunschweig and its neighborhoods, the mystery stories feature a distinctlocal color .Rühmann's pursuit of
authenticity is outstanding; his stories are often inspired by real cases of the Braunschweig area. Political events such as theFall of the Wall also play a role.The teacher, lay preacher, and local politician often uses his fiction for
