The school first opened in 1893. The mascot of the school was the Trojan. In 1971, the school moved from its original building, which now houses administrative offices for the district.
In 2007, in a controversial move, the Duluth School Board announced that they would support a long-range plan for the district which would close Central and keep a renovated Ordean Middle School and Denfeld High School as the only two high schools in Duluth. Central High closed at the end of the 2010-2011 school year.
