Armstrong Siddeley Viper

The Viper was a turbojet engine developed and produced by Armstrong Siddeley and then by its successor companies Bristol-Siddeley and Rolls-Royce Limited. It entered service in 1953.

The design is a 7-stage compressor based on their Sapphire engine — in effect a small scale Sapphire.

Applications

The Viper was developed as an expendable engine for powering a target drone, the Jindivik, but the limited-life materials used were subsequently replaced with standard ones and it was then used as an aircraft engine on the Jet Provost and its budget attack aircraft derivative the BAC Strikemaster, the Hawker-Siddeley Dominie, the Avro Shackleton (as an auxiliary engine to its propellers) Aermacchi MB-326, Soko J-22 Orao/IAR-93 (afterburned version), Soko G-2 Galeb,
Soko G-4 Super Galeb and the Utva G-4M Super Galeb.
