Fukushima-ku, Osaka

Nihongo|Fukushima-ku|福島区 is one of 24 wards of Osaka city, Japan.

Most part of this ward is residential quarter, office buildings and commercial district. But some factories and wholeseler companies exist.In recent years, many high rise apartment buildings and office buildings have been built in this ward, because it is near Umeda and Dojima business centres.

As of 2008, the number of residents is 63,237 [Population on 2008/08/01, referred from [http://www.city.osaka.jp/keikakuchousei/toukei/B000/Ba00/Ba00.html Official Stat of Osaka City] ] . History

This district (north part of Dojima) was suburban farm village at Edo period, and large factories especially of textile were built after Meiji period. Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. was established in 1918 in Fukushima-ku. Even present days, there is many printing factory and wholeseler of automobile parts at this place. Prior to World War II, Osaka University Hospital and Osaka City Central Market was built.After World War II, many office buildings were built around JR Fukushima station, because the place is close to Umeda (business centre of western Japan). Other place of Fukushima-ku is converted from factory into residential quarter and commercial district.

Recent years, high rise apartment building was built at many places in Fukushima-ku. In 2008, Hotarumachi was redeveloped at the former site of Osaka University Hospital.
