Management of each firm first proposed the merger in May 2007, and partners of each firm approved it on September 12. Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP will have gross revenues of approximately $400 million, placing it within The American Lawyer’s “AmLaw 100” annual rankings of the top U.S. law firms.

Legacy Locke Liddell was founded in 1891 in
Dallas while legacy Lord Bissell was founded in 1914 inChicago . The Chicago arm of the post-merger LLB&L was known for its strengths ininsurance andreinsurance litigation, regulatory and transactional work, particularly in the Chicago market. It also had launched and fostered aLondon office to service insurance-related matters. It was known as an insurer-side law firm that tended to represent insurance companies and not policy holders. In 2000 the firm settled a lawsuit which had asserted that "it aided a client in defrauding investors," for $22m, the client being a company belonging to
