Harvey Schiller

Harvey W. Schiller, Ph.D., is Chairman of the Board and CEO of Global Options Group, a multidisciplinary international risk management and business solutions company. In addition, Dr. Schiller has been named to the newly-created position of Vice Chairman and President of the Sports, Media, and Entertainment Practice of "Diversified Search", one of the top global executive search firms., and Chairman of Schiller Management Group LLC, a business consulting group. He also recently served as President of the International Baseball Federation, the international governing body for baseball.

Biography

Schiller came to GlobalOptions from a position as Chairman of Assante U.S., a leading provider of financial and life management products. Prior to joining Assante, Schiller served as Chairman and CEO of YankeeNets, an integrated sports-based media company with ownership of the New York Yankees, New Jersey Nets, and New Jersey Devils, the precursor to the highly successful YES network. Until December, 1999, Dr. Schiller served as vice president, sports programming for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.; president of Turner Sports, Inc., a division of Time Warner; and president and governor of the NHL expansion franchise, Atlanta Thrashers. Schiller was one of the executives in charge of World Championship Wrestling. He once appeared on the wrestling show WCW Monday Nitro, when he suspended WCW president Eric Bischoff in March 1997.

Before joining Turner in 1994, Schiller was Executive Director/Secretary General of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). Holding this position since 1990, he was instrumental in instituting significant changes within the organization to improve its financial health. and served on several (IOC) and other international sport bodies. During his tenure with the USOC, he was involved in the award of the Olympic Games to the cities of Atlanta and Salt Lake. He later served on the Executive Board of the 2012 New York City Olympic bid. He also served as a consultant to the 1984 Los Angeles Games as the boxing competition director. In December 1994, he was awarded the prestigious Olympic Order, the highest decorated honor presented to an individual by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Other awards have included Right to Play, Ellis Island Medal, and New York Athletic Club Hall of Fame. He has been recognized several times by The Sporting News "100 Most Powerful People In Sports."

Schiller joined the USOC after serving as Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference from 1986 to 1990 and served as a member of the NCAA Executive and Championship Committees. He served as a command pilot in the U.S. Air Force (USAF) from 1962 to 1986 logging over 5,000 hours including combat service in Vietnam, and attained the rank of Brigadier General. His military training included the Armed Forces Staff College and Army Airborne (parachutist) training. He holds several FAA ratings including glider instructor pilot. In 1980, the President of the United States appointed Schiller as a Permanent Professor and department chairman at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He is a recipient of several military awards including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medals, Meritorious Service, and others.

Schiller, a New York City native attended Erasmus Hall High School and earned his bachelor's degree from The Citadel and is a member of their Athletic Hall of Fame, Business Hall of Fame, and a recent recipient of their prestigious Palmetto Award. He earned his master's degree and doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, and holds honorary doctorates from The Citadel, Northern Michigan University, and The United States Sports Academy. In 1980, Schiller served as a USA Department of State advisor in Nairobi, Kenya overseeing an alternate competition for those countries not participating in the Moscow Games. In 1985, he lead the marketing and logistics of the Live Aid Concert in support of African relief. Schiller is active in a variety of national organizations and corporate Boards. He served as Vice Chair of the New York City Host Committee of the 2004 Republican National Convention and as member of the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars. He is a board member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, the new formed Air Force Academy Athletic Corporation, Mesa Air Group, the Competitor Group, the Guidepost Solutions Advisory Group, Major League Baseball Classic, the IOC Commission on Women and Sport, and co-chair of the New York City public Business of Sport School.
